The controller’s behavior during communication is anything but professional. An air traffic controller must always remain calm, courteous, and impartial, regardless of the situation or the pilot’s behavior. Communication must be clear, precise, and focused on ensuring flight safety, as well as avoiding misunderstandings that could endanger aircraft.<\/p>\n
It is entirely normal for a pilot to repeat their call after receiving no response from the controller, as they cannot be certain their transmission was successful. If the controller is busy, they can simply request the pilot\u2019s patience without adopting a confrontational tone. “Standby” is commonly used in such situations, but expressions like “If I\u2019m not answering, I\u2019m busy” and directly responding with sarcasm are not acceptable in aviation.<\/p>\n
Regarding the conversation with the second pilot, it is obvious that the controller is unfamiliar with the VFR route, even though it has been published for two years. Instead of acknowledging this, the controller attempts to cover up his inadequacy with a confrontational attitude, which the pilot also notes.<\/p>\n
It is crucial that controllers and pilots strictly follow communication protocols to maintain the safety and efficiency of air traffic. Unfortunately, the above poor example of behavior is not an exception for some controllers in the Athens TMA, especially during the summer months when air traffic is significantly higher. Perhaps better training as well as evaluation are necessary measures to address such issues.<\/p>\n
